About the breach

In April 2024, the French sporting equipment retailer Sport 2000 suffered a major data breach that exposed the personal information of roughly 3.2 million unique users (spanning about 4.4 to 4.5 million total rows of data).

Key Details of the Incident

• Date of Breach: April 18, 2024

• Exposed Data Types:

• Full names
• Email addresses (~3.2 million unique)
• Physical/geographic addresses
• Phone numbers
• Dates of birth
• Store purchase histories and location/salutation details

• Passwords: Plaintext or hashed passwords were not included in the leaked dataset.

• Timeline & Public Leak:

• Shortly after the attack, the database was put up for sale on underground hacking forums.
• The data was later shared more widely for free around June and August 2024, and indexed by security services like Have I Been Pwned.

Risks

Even though passwords were not leaked, the exposed personal details (such as names, dates of birth, phone numbers, and purchase records) create a high risk for targeted phishing attacks, social engineering, and identity theft.

How to protect yourself

In order to protect yourself, we recommend the following:

1. Monitor your credit report for any suspicious activities. If you cannot do this yourself, make use of any service that does this on your behalf.

2. Be on the lookout for an increase in number of spam or scam calls and emails. We recommend you make use of Apps like True Caller, which can assist you in identifying any possible spam or scam calls.

3. Be sure to monitor your bank account transactions. Ensure you receive real time notifications on any transaction.
